Pre-Production: Week 15

Week 15 - Second Seminar

Thursday 4th February:

  • Paperman animation - I watched this as research for a silent romance short, as our planned project is about meeting somebody you're romantically interested in, and it happens to also not use dialogue. What I learned from this was that in order for them to meet and to not have an ending that could be worked out by the audience, there needs to be some tension or some failed attempts (mentioned in the lecture prior to the seminar). This keeps the audience interested in how they're going to meet and the aftermath of this event, which lead to more planning and addition to the treatment on my behalf

  • I've been put in charge of locations - Choose locations, check lighting, take still shots on camera (phone), make sure it's safe, risk assessment, difficulties of filming on that location including practical issues with getting equipment there. I need to write it all in the treatment once I know where we are filming.

Pre-Production: Week 14

Week 14 - First Seminar

Tuesday 26th January:

Short group meeting at around lunch time, plot of film established, roles established, locations briefly mentioned and talk of who will be our actors. We've done this because we wanted to establish early on what was happening and who is doing what, I believe it would be a lot easier to do things in the future with a solid foundation early one.

Thursday 28th January:

Research done, watched Bad Day by Daniel Powter, this was successful because we managed to gain some ideas such as split screen matching routines for our characters, and a possible cross interaction where one character has an impact on the other character's life unintentionally even though they have never met each other.

Discussed plot of our short film with Helen

Starting the treatment:

  • Started the treatment document and began to plan at the top.
  • I wrote the log line for our group in the treatment.
  • Planned some scenes in the treatment.
  • Suggested what the characters personality traits should be.
